‘Education is the way, not compulsion’

December 25th, 2008 by Neet |

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin’s proposals for HIV carriers do not amount to any official stand by the state government, according to state senior executive councillor Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham. It was just Nizar’s opinions born out of good intentions, said Ngeh, who is also Perak DAP chairman, after a briefing on the state-organised Christmas concert on Saturday.

Nizar had suggested that people who were HIV-positive be quarantined and not allowed to marry. Ngeh said Nizar had good intentions in wanting to prevent HIV from being transmitted to the next generation. He pointed out, however, that mothers who tested positive for HIV could give birth to children who were not infected by HIV, adding that one should not criminalise a medical condition.

“Compulsion is not the way. We should educate people. Churches and temples can provide counselling or AIDS education.” On Pas’ agenda to implement hudud laws, he said Perak could be the model on governing a state based on the five universal principles agreed by major religions comprising justice, effective government, transparency, trustworthiness and welfare of the people.

He said there was no question on implementing hudud as such a move would require amending the Federal Constitution. On the state government replacing its official cars with Toyota Camry 2.4, he said it wanted to continue using the Proton Perdana V6 but found that the cars often required repairs leading to higher maintenance costs. On Saturday’s Christmas concert, Ngeh said various groups of Christians, including Iban and Semai, would be performing. Juwita Suwito is the guest artiste.

Shahid Kapoor’s body secrets

December 24th, 2008 by Neet |

ImageShahid Kapur had built a muscular body after rigorously training for around six months for Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminay in which he plays a gambler. However, as soon as the shooting for the movie finished, his next venture (a Ken Ghosh film titled Yahoo) demanded him to reduce his beefy body to fit into the role of a dancer. Shahid just had four weeks to become lean and very flexible and was worried how he could do it.

We learnt that the actor took up gymnastics to get an athlete-like body and accomplished the feat before Yahoo went to the floors. Shahid’s trainer Abbas Ali says, “Shahid did not have much time to build his body for
Ken Ghosh’s film. He actually did not have time at his hand at all. He told me that he has to develop a lean but a very fit look for the film and he only had a month’s time to do so. The only way he could achieve the impossible without harming his health was through functional training which meant doing a lot of sports-based training exercises. I introduced him to gymnastics and he loved it.”

Ali adds, “Gymnastics make the body flexible which will enable him to give a great performance in Yahoo which is basically a film about a dancer. He took a liking for it and trained on it religiously. Along with gymnastics, he also did power yoga and other physical training exercises and in one month he got the body he wanted. Now, Shahid has reached an optimum fat percentage level.”

HOW DID YOU LOSE YOUR KILOS? TRIED A DIET?

I didn’t lose weight by dieting. I eat everything as long as it is healthy. My cook uses very little oil and we avoid rich spices. When eating out we opt for tandoori food rather than gravies. If we are eating Chinese we ensure that we order for boiled rice instead of noodles. The idea is to make healthy eating a day-today practice for the whole family. Even my husband Rishi, who has grown up eating typically rich punjabi food, now prefers to go easy on oil and spices.

WHAT ABOUT WORKOUTS?

I do 45 minutes of brisk walking and 15 minutes of yoga every day, come what may. this is a rule that I have made a part of my life. Whether i have a late night or i have to travel. it doesn’t change. For me, good health is a package deal. It includes eating the right kind of food and exercising.

WHAT’S YOUR DAILY DIET?

I start the day with celery and apple juice or any other vegetable juice. This acts as a detox. breakfast consists of porridge and fruits. I limit my tea intake to just two cups a day with halfa- teaspoon of sugar in each. if i feel like having eggs then it has to be an omelette of egg-whites.

Lunch is vegetables with bajra or jowar bhakris (Farmers’ roti from western india, rich in protein). We totally avoid wheat flour. it tends to stick in the intestines. For the same reason we don’t eat maida. We go for wholewheat pasta that is now easily available in the market.

At teatime, I have a few nuts and later in the evening i treat myself to a bowl of soup. Dinner is over by 8 o’clock in the evening. I keep it light. Typically it is grilled fish and a vegetable. I avoid carbohydrates at night.

YOUR SKIN’S GLOWING TOO!

Thank you! it is not an outcome of fancy facials or beauty masks only but good food and exercise. What shows on the skin is what you put inside you. Exercising helps blood circulation and that works wonders for the skin. I did not switch to a healthier lifestyle to look good. If it is making me glow then it is one more reason to stick to this regime. You should try it too!

The Thomas Keller Thanksgiving Day Contingency Plan

November 25th, 2008 by Jasbir Kaur |

ImageOne of the better parts about the culinary juggernaut that is the collected restaurants of Thomas Keller— which include per se and Bouchon here in New York— is that you can bet that any and all pies, cookies or cakes associated with said juggernaut are going to be good. Especially if you forgot to place your special orders for baked goods you’ll need to be lugging somewhere on Thursday, Bouchon Bakery will be your friend, confidant, and possibly your lover, all gussied up with pumpkin and chocolate shavings.

The time for special orders at most bakeries has come and gone, so here’s your secret Thanksgiving weapon if you need one: dessert selections that are over the top (a la Sylvester Stallone), that can be served a la mode. From left: pumpkin custard topped with mascarpone cream and pumpkin streusel. Middle: bourbon pecan pie with 70% chocolate ganache. Right: banana chocolate cream pie topped with banana nougatine. All pies feed 6-8 and cost $30, but they’re very handsome, aren’t they? Since the Sears Portrait Studio refused to shoot pies, we took a few of these little guys to the park and let them run free. They went nowhere.

On the less expensive side, black walnut cookies are Bouchon’s powdered sugarbomb kissing cousin to the Mexican wedding cookie, and are sold in bags for $10. Brown sugar shortbread cookies go $9 a bag. Bouchon is selling turkey cutout cookies that look like you traced your hand in a turkey shape and colored it in, only using fancy chocolate instead of crayons and spicebread instead of construction paper, for $3.25 each.

Ildico

November 18th, 2008 by Neet |

In Norse mythology, Gudrun, who is called Kriemhild in the Nibelungenlied, was the sister of Gunnar. She is loosely based on the princess Ildico in her role as the wife of Attila the Hun. Gudrun fell in love with Sigurd, who didn’t care for her, because he was in love with the valkyrie Brynhild, to whom he gave the ring Andvarinaut.

Aaloo Tikki aur Pudine ki Chutney

November 10th, 2008 by Neet |

ImageThis is Abhishek Bachchan’s favourite dish, and it’s very popular with the whole family. Across India, there are variations on the stuffing, from mashed peas to spice blends, but the Bachchans prefer it simple and don’t stuff theirs. Mint chutney is always prepared from the fresh herb and not kept overnight, as the flavour deteriorates quickly.

To make the mint chutney, whizz the ingredients in a blender and set aside.

Combine the mashed potatoes with the ground cumin seeds, black pepper and the salt to taste. Shape the mixture into 12 cutlets.

Heat a little oil in a skillet on a medium heat. Place the potato cutlets gently into the pan, cook for one minute then increase the heat. Turn them over and continue to cook. Perfect cutlets are crisp on both sides and golden brown in colour.

Place on paper towels to drain the oil and serve piping hot with the chutney.
For the mint chutney

9oz mint leaves
1 large onion
2 large whole green chiles
juice of 3 lemons
1/2 teaspoon rock salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the cutlets

3 1/2lbs potatoes, boiled, peeled, cooled and mashed
2 tablespoons cumin seeds, roasted and ground
1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
6 teaspoons vegetable oil
salt to taste

Lose Weight USA

October 31st, 2008 by Neet |

The following article presents the very latest information on how to Lose Weight. If you have a particular interest in Losing Weight, then this informative article is required reading.

You’ve made the decision to lose weight as quickly as possible. You have your diet in place and you expect to follow it religiously. At this point, you may be wondering how much weight you can lose in a given week and whether fast weight loss can be dangerous for your body.

There are a number of things that can affect how you lose weight . For example, family history, or genetics, can play a significant role. Also, your weight loss may depend upon how much exercise you’re engaging in, as well as how much stress you are under. Your metabolism, or how quickly you burn calories, can also have a major effect.

Theoretically, you could lose as much as 20 pounds a week. But, much of that weight could be water weight. That means that, once you go off your diet, you are likely to gain much of that weight back. Also, unless you engage in strength training, you will be losing muscle as well as fat, since about ¼ of the body’s weight consists of muscle. It is interesting to note that, at most, you can probably lose four pounds of fat in a given week.

Nature has a way of protecting the body against excessive weight loss. If, for instance, your calorie count suddenly drops, your body will compensate for the fact by reducing your metabolic rate. As a result, you’ll need fewer calories to maintain your weight. This explains why some people lose weight up to a point and then cannot lose any additional weight, no matter how hard they try.

If you lose weight quickly, there’s a good chance that your health will be jeopardized. For instance, fast weight loss has been linked to the appearance of gall stones. Also, you may experience loose skin as your weight goes into free fall. Perhaps most distressing of all, if you lose weight rapidly, there’s a good chance that you will gain the weight back again. This is because it is very difficult to maintain a healthy diet regimen. You may find yourself falling back into your bad eating habits after a period of deprivation.

When you lose weight fast it also places you at greater risk for an eating disorder. You may be tempted to starve yourself, leading to anorexia. Or, because your food cravings are so great, you may want to binge and purge, leading to a case of bulimia. This is why it is so critically important to lose weight under a physician’s care. Otherwise, you could be doing more harm to your body than good.

Although the body has the capability of shedding a great deal of weight over a period of time, most medical experts agree that one should not expect to lose more than one or two pounds a week in order to remain healthy. This can be disappointing to a dieter, especially one that needs to lose about 50 pounds. However, doctors believe that the go-slow approach is best way to lose weight over the long term. Otherwise, you could end up with a number of health problems you weren’t anticipating.

There are a number of approaches you can use to lose weight. For instance, you might follow the Atkins plan, the Zone, or the diabetic diet. You might try Sugar Busters or the Carb Addict’s prescription for losing weight. However, it is vitally important that you accompany your diet plan with an effective exercise routine. One of the best exercises you can do, in fact, is the easiest—walking. It has been said that you can lose as many as two pounds a week, just by walking alone.

As has been demonstrated here, rapid weight loss should be approached with caution. It is far better to lose a few pounds each week and maintain that weight loss over the long term. In essence, all good things take time, and that is particularly true when it comes to lose weight. Perhaps the best advice is to be patient. Follow a reasonable diet, get plenty of exercise, and drink a good amount of water. That way, you should be able to slowly lose weight without jeopardizing your health in the process.

Loose weight the healthy way

October 31st, 2008 by Neet |

Loose weight the healthy way.I talked about how I let laziness get into my life, and how I got the motivation to overcome it. This time I’ll talk about what I really do on a day-to-day basis.

First experiment

After that event that triggered my motivation, I started to slowly introduce changes in my daily routine. I think I started the all process in March 2006. I decided to pay some attention to the diet and exercise, but without being extra zealous. The idea was to see what kind of changes I could make in the long run if I just kept at it without overwhelming effort.

For the diet part, I’ve cut down on some foods. Was still eating everything, but whenever possible used common sense to avoid well known bad foods (chips, burgers, etc). I still had those once in a while, but rarely. Maybe at the weekend when going out with friends, etc. Also, since kid that I used to sit down at night (or while in front of the computer), grab a big mug of tea or milk, and stuff myself with cookies. I also learned to avoid that.
I started having more salads and fruit, and reducing drinks with sugar.

For the exercise part, I’ve started running 3-5 times a week. 3 times at least. That was the first thing I did the moment I got home from work. There were days I felt just like staying in the couch after work, so the best thing for those days was to just change clothes and get out of the door without thinking too much. I would arrive from work and in a few minutes I would be running. That’s the best way to do it to get over those lazy days. Don’t think too much…. Just do it. Just get started.
I guess in this case we can use the following quote…
“Eighty percent of success is showing up.”
In this situation it means that if you need to exercise (e.g: run), but you’re feeling lazy… just get out the door, and the rest will take care of itself. I assume the moment you get out the door, you won’t think.. “I’m feeling lazy today. I’ll just get back home and run tomorrow instead”, right ? Well, maybe you can do it… if you don’t have any dignity at all.
One other thing that helps is running with a friend. That makes it harder to skip it. We never want to let down a friend, right ?
Sometimes I would go out running alone, other times with my friend I talked about in the first part of the post. Yes, the same one that “insulted” me. He had the courage to speak the truth. One of my best friends!
Like I said above, I started this routine in March 2006. I exercised for about 45 minutes, mixing running with other exercises (sit ups, pushups, press ups, etc).
That’s no extraordinary amount of exercise, but I was decided to keep going. It wasn’t a “quick fix” (neither the diet, neither the exercise).
I started a exercise log, taking note of the days I exercised, and keeping track of my weight. I knew it would be a slow process, but I wasn’t in any particular rush. I kept doing it, slowly losing weight. I started with 74.5kgs (around 164 lb). After 2 months I lost 4 kgs (~8 lb). Not much I know, but believe me… it makes an hell of a difference in the way we look. I lost fat while gaining muscle, and looking at pictures it looked like I lost 10 kgs (20 lb).

I kept this routine for about 2 years, until early this year, when I moved to Scotland. Overall I was feeling great for someone that works in front of a computer all day.

Second experiment

After moving to Scotland, I had a settling down period where I stopped exercising again, maybe for 2 months. But I was walking to work everyday, so wasn’t that bad. I was walking at least 30 minutes each day.
During that period, I slowly started getting lazy on the diet, and consequently gained weight again. I was cooking for myself, so I was getting wild on the things I like. I simply love pasta and rice, for example. Very caloric foods.

Eventually after settling down, I decided to start exercising again. Getting started wasn’t easy, mainly because of the cold I guess. A lot colder here in Scotland than in Portugal.
This time around I decided to take things to the next level to see what kind of results I would get. I started both a exercise AND a food diary.
I started taking detailed notes of everything, controlling calories intake, and calories burned with exercise.
That was the first time I decided to keep a food diary.
Any books or decent articles about controlling weight will tell you that a food diary is one of the best tools. Normally we don’t have any idea of what we eat, or how many calories we are getting per day. If you never tried keeping a food diary, I dare you to try it for some time. You’ll probably be amazed with the results. Even if you don’t really improve your diet, you will learn valuable lessons, like:
a better feeling for the right portions (instead of eating until full)
balanced diet (diversified) ?
from what foods are you getting most of your calories

It’s hard to keep a food diary. It means you must take note of everything to know your calorie intake. You need to take note of every snack, of everything you eat or drink.

All true.
Try keeping a food diary and you’ll find out for yourself too. There are plenty of websites that offer food diary tools.
If shop at Tesco a lot, it will make your life easier, since it already has a database with their products. I never tried it, but a friend of mine did. Personally I prefer software whenever available, so I didn’t bothered trying a web based solution.

I find Diet Organizer particularly easy to use. You can keep track of the exercise, diet, and weight. Comes with an extensive food database, and you can even add your own foods (or even recipes). Same goes for exercise! Comes with a database of common exercises, but you can add your own.
Also it has a basic diet planner, which can help you loose weight if you stick to it.
Overall it has most of the features you would need, but it still manages to keep it simple enough.

So, like I was saying, I’ve been keeping a food and exercise diary for about 4 months, with amazing results.
Slowly, in 4 months, I’ve lost 9kgs (~20lb) . Note that this was without any crazy diets. What I did was set up a diet plan.
Setting up a basic diet plan is easy. All you have to do is figure out your metabolic rate (calories you need to eat to keep your weight without doing extra exercise), then depending on how fast you want to loose weight, you keep your daily calorie intake below that.
So for my diet plan, I figured out that my metabolic rate is around 2200 calories (you can find online tools to calculate yours), and decided to keep my calorie daily intake 500 below that.
That means that per week, I would be consuming less 3500 (500*7) calories than my body needed to maintain current weight.
I’ve choose 500 because it seems a common value found around the internet.
Search for ” 1lb of fat 500 calories ” in google, and you’ll understand why. On practical terms, means that if you keep your daily intake 500 calories below your metabolic rate, you’ll loose 1 lb per week.

So now do the math… losing 1 lb per week means 4 lb per month. In 4 months that means (4*40=16lb) . As I said above, in 4 months I’ve lost 20lb. I’ve actually lost more weight than I’ve initially set for my diet plan. The reason for that is that I also started exercising a lot more. Taking note of everything motivated me to improve.
My calorie allowance for a day without exercise is around 1700 calories. (2200 – 500). If I exercise that basically means my daily calorie allowance increase. Common sense… If I burn more calories with exercise, I can eat more and still keep within the diet plan.
So the math to calculate your daily calorie allowance is (Metabolic rate + calories burned with extra exercise – diet plan calories )

My diet plan has turned out very reliable so far. I’ve lost more weight than planned because if I exercise, I end up not eating enough calories to make up for the ones I’ve burned exercising. So in average, I’d say my diet plan turned out ~600-700 less calories, instead of 500.

When I started this 4 months ago, my exercise (excluding the walking to work) consisted of 40-50 minutes running. My typical run was about 8 km. After the run, I would occasionally do some exercises (sit ups, push ups, press ups, etc).

About 2 months ago I started increasing the distance once in a while when I was feeling more energetic. I remember one day I did 12 km, a few days after , around 17km, and the next week I did 21 km. That’s half a marathon ! First time I did that. I remember it was on a Monday. Great feeling. Needless to say, I felt sore for a week, but was worth it.
After that half a marathon, I got back to the usual 8km with the ocasional bigger distance without any problems. I remember one week that I ran the usual 8km on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday… and Friday I did another half a marathon without even feeling sore the day after.

Lately, I’ve permanently increased the distance, and started doing some weight lifting along with the other exercises after running, so my exercise routine has been running 12km, followed by 30-45 minutes weight lifting+several exercises.
I still plan to keep increasing the distance once in a while. The problem is not if I can, but the time it takes. I finally managed to make exercise part of my daily routine, for the worst and for the best. This means I have less time for other things too. If I account for the time I take to exercise and shower, its taking between 90-120 minutes of my day.
But the feeling is great. I haven’t felt this good in a long time, really!
I guess the next thing I’ll need to improve on is my time management skills, otherwise I can’t do anything else.

Conclusion

The conclusion is that looking back to only 4 months ago, I notice a big difference in the way I feel and look.
Slowly, I’ve improved my diet a lot (in both quantity and quality):
I now eat a lot more fruit and vegetables
I started making smoothies with fruits and vegetables
I’ve cut down on meat and meat products
I’ve cut down a lot on chips and fast food. (Sometimes I spend an entire month without having those)
I rarely have sweets. Most of the time I snack on fruit while at work
I’ve replaced some foods for healthier alternatives, or I keep alternating them. For example, I’ve been alternating between dairy milk and soy milk for some time now. Some brands of soy milk actually taste nicely. After a while you start enjoying it. I’ve been drinking the Tesco’s one. Can’t remember the exact name, but its a blue package (not the Value one I think)
When I have dairy milk Its mostly skimmed or semi-skimmed
For yogurts, I’ve having low fat ones too

On the exercise side, I managed to squeeze exercise in my life. Still too early to say for sure if I’ll manage to make it a permanent change, but I know I’m on the right direction.

I’ve already over-extended myself with this post. It’s the biggest post so far, and I could still keep going for a little more.
Feel free to contact me or comment. I’ll be glad to write more about this topic or share more personal experiences.

Weight Loss in Teens

October 31st, 2008 by Neet |

According to recent studies more kids nowadays are mild to severely overweight. The 1999-2000 National health survey indicates that 15 % of children and teens are overweight.

The figure is nearly double that what was recorded a decade or so ago. Some blame their present lifestyle while others blame the lack of discipline in teens nowadays. Regardless of the reasons, teen weight problems are real.

But unlike weight loss programs for adults, losing weight with teenagers are a little tricky since such programs when left uncheck can be potentially dangerous for their health. Because of this reason and the dangers of it, dietitian and nutrition experts approach the subject with caution.

The basic problem with teen weight loss is that their bodies are still growing and developing and cutting down food intake will greatly influence their growth. It is therefore important that diet programs for teens should cover all their nutritional needs.

For teenagers, they generally need to grasp some basic concepts about eating right. If they eat too little, their health will be put at risk. But similarly, if they eat more that they should, the extra food turns into body fat causing weight issues. Teenagers should learn to eat food less with saturated fats.

Unhealthy foods include those fried in fat and oil like fried chicken, burgers, potato chips, french fries, potato chips and other fatty meat which teens like to pick. Meanwhile, they also should try to avoid foods that are high in fat and sugar contents like cakes, chocolates, butter, cream, peanut butter, pies, cookies, and generally any sweets and sweet based desserts.

There are various diet programs which claim to be the best solutions for over weight teens. These claims generally revolve around two basic things: the right diet and regular exercise. In reality, the quickest and easiest way for teens to loose weight is to still the have the right diet and enough exercise. Teens should always avoid diet pills.

Most of the kids or teens today eat fast foods mainly because of habit, and get exceedingly large food portions as well as lacking the necessary activities to build a healthy body. Simple outdoor activities for teens can help them loose some of their excess body weight eaily. When you cut grass use a push mower, for example. Engage in activities like playing Frisbee which would help you exercise without even realizing it and can be an enjoyable experience.

There’s really no easy way to loose weight. You need to work the excess fat off your body on a regular basis. It is the right combination of diet and exercise which will help you loose weight quickly. But the problem with dieting and exercising is keeping motivated and goal oriented. Kids find dieting intimidating and regular exercise boring, but without it, they wont lose those pounds.

This is why full family support is necessary if you want your kids to loose some weight. Your family need to keep the kids and teens trying to lose weight motivated. Encourage them and help them overcome their bad eating patterns by cooking, serving and eating the same food diets that they eat. Get them to be more active in exercise. If they find regular exercises boring, join them in other activities such as sports.

Teach them what to look for when they eat outdoors and especially at parties. Tell them the benefits of foods and teach them how to read food labels. You may be able to control their diet while they stay home but when they go outside and eat with friends, then you might have a problem. You should implant a sense of self discipline and pride in what they eat.

The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbor.

Before she says a word, Bob says, “I’ll give you $800 to drop that towel, “

After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob After a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves.

The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs.

When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, “Who was that?”

“It was Bob the next door neighbor,” she replies.

“Great,” the husband says, “did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?”

A priest offered a Nun a lift. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg.

The nun said, “Father, remember Psalm 129?”

The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.

The nun once again said, “Father, remember Psalm 129?”

The priest apologized “Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.”

Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way.

On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129 It said, “Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.”

Puff! She’s gone.

“Me next! Me next!” says the sales rep. “I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.”

Puff! He’s gone.

“Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull.

They’re packed with nutrients.”

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the you tree.

He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story BullShit might get you to the top, but it won’t keepthere.

*********

Lesson 6:

A little bird was flying south for the Winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was.

The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.

A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.

Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Morals of this story

(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy..

(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.

(3) And when you’re in deep shit, it’s best to keep your mouth shut!
